Annual ride to honor and remember victims of traffic violence
2014 marks the 10th anniversary of the Ride of Silence in Pittsburgh, a gathering of people to ride their bikes in silent remembrance of community members who have lost their lives due to traffic violence.
On the third Wednesday in May, people in communities around the world gather to ride in complete silence. The ride allows the community to come together and honor the lives that have been lost. All riders wear black armbands to show solidarity. Riders who are survivors of traffic violence wear red.
BikePGH has always been, and will always be, a supporter of this ride. The sadness that these acts of traffic violence bring to our community is enormous. These are our children, parents, friends and neighbors.
Traffic deaths are avoidable tragedies. Observances like these show that the community wants the city planning, policy, infrastructure and enforcement to end traffic deaths on our roads.
