Last year, a bruised 8-year-old Iain Engle-Roe — sporting an eye patch, bandages and sling — had to be pushed on a bike by his mother to participate in the Ride of Silence, an annual event recognizing those who have been killed or harmed on public roadways.

This year, he will return to ride.

“I guess I want people to see Iain riding around his bike,” said his mother, Kristen Engle, 52, of Point Breeze. “I want to see him enjoy that, that he’s recovered well enough to ride.”

Iain was in between hospital visits for last year’s ride, which occurred a month after a driver collided with him at the intersection of South Lexington Avenue and Reynolds Street in Point Breeze, his mother said. One year later, her son is back on his bike but still in need of more surgeries.

“It’s all in the forefront of our lives, especially at this time of the year,” she said. “Ride of Silence is just really special.”
