Bike light recipients leave with smiling faces
Last night 53 people rode away from our pop-up event much safer and happier than before. The October Bike Light Giveaway took place in the neighborhoods of Larimer and Oakland at the Kingsley Center and Scheneley Plaza.
Eight volunteers–four at each location–assisted BikePGH staff members in flagging down lightless bicycle riders by displaying bright signs reading “Free Bike Lights”, ringing bike bells, and playing music on a jambox. Volunteers came equipped with screw drivers to install a front white light and rear red light on each person’s bicycle, and sent riders off with a Pittsburgh Bike Map and Urban Biking Companion to learn more about riding safely in Pittsburgh.
There were plenty of skeptics who didn’t believe the lights could possibly be free; but thanks to our Light Giveaway sponsor Performance Bike, and our concern for bike riders’ safety, we were able to make this free pop-up event happen. The Bike Light Giveaway brought lots of smiles to our streets!
