Sometimes Less is More
By Ngani Ndimbie
Biking to grab groceries and accomplish errands is one of the greatest joys of urban living. But people who bike in Pittsburgh and across the Commonwealth will tell you this: carrying a case of beer on your bike ain’t easy.
But we bike-loving Pennsylvanians recently got a great gift from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PCLB). On March 6th, the PCLB declared that beer distributors can now sell 12-packs, thanks to a loophole in state law that was discovered by a Pittsburgh lawyer. Whether they know it or not, this PCLB decision is a victory for the Pennsylvanians who ride bicycles. Heck, it’s a win for pedestrians and transit riders.
So while it might sound silly, and yes, we’re celebrating a convenience that people in other states have had for decades, the 12-pack decision has made it a bunch easier to be car-free in Pennsylvania. So raise a brewski and ring your bike bell to celebrate the fact that doing your errands by bike just got easier.
Local beer distributor owner Frank Pistella said, “This is the biggest thing to happen to beer since 1933.” Couldn’t agree more.
(Note: you can also buy 6-packs and 12-packs from your local bar and some grocery stores.)

As implied by the end-note, you can always go to your local bar and buy a couple of 6-packs. Which are even easier to cart around, since you can be balanced by putting one in each pannier.
The 12-pack development has more to do with fluffing the beer distributors than with your enjoyment of malted beverages…
