We’ve all heard it: “No one uses those bike lanes on Penn Ave,” but in truth, more than 24,000 trips were taken in May along the Penn Ave protected bike lane.
In a great piece published today, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Editorial Board explains that more bike lanes would be a boon to Pittsburgh.
When the bike lane on Penn Avenue was first installed last September, a few suspected that no one would ever use it. But a report from the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership released last week proves otherwise.
According to the study, 24,000 rides were taken on the Penn Avenue lane in May alone. On weekdays, ridership averaged 740 trips daily, with most activity occurring during the morning and afternoon rush. On weekends, ridership averaged 875 trips daily, with most activity occurring during the early-morning hours.
