Costumes So Creative It’s Scary
October is the month for pumpkins, costumes, and candy. But why leave your bike at home on Halloween? There are some great parties and rides on tap in the coming weeks and, with a little clever thinking, a bike can be part of a fabulous costume. Here are some tips for making the most out of your Halloween in 2015.
Do’s and Don’ts
Designing a bike-friendly costume isn’t difficult, but it does require some advance planning. Keep in mind the following before you head out for the night:
- Think twice before wearing capes, tails, appendages, etc. that could become tangled in your spokes or chain. If you are dead set on donning superhero garb, pins can be useful for keeping your costume out of harm’s way during a ride.
- If you’re heading out after dark, do equip some lights and remember that dark costumes will make you less visible to drivers.
- Don’t wear full masks that will make it harder to see on the road.
- Do leave room for a proper helmet. Better yet, incorporate one into your costume! Hair helmet, anyone?

Be creative
Creative costuming is one of the things that makes the Halloween season great. Go above and beyond with a bike-themed costume this year.

Take a ride
Once you get your costume together, saddle up with some friends. Here are a few Halloween-themed group rides coming up later this month.
- PGH Underwear Bike Ride is hosting a special Halloween ride on October 29 at 8pm. The ride ends at Penn Brewery and there will be a costume contest with cash prizes.
- BikePGH will lead a Costume Bike Ride to Healthy Ride’s Bike Scare Bash on Friday, October 30 at 5:15pm.
