Biking is a yearlong activity, but when the weather gets iffy during the winter months, it’s important to stay safe.

By late December, we’ve usually already experienced freezing temperatures and some snowfall. Fortunately, so far this year, things have been a bit different (knock on wood). Given the warm weather we’ve had, it seems like we’re well on our way to spring. However, it’s likely we won’t be that lucky, and, as they say in Game of Thrones, “winter is coming.”
Winter riding can be enjoyable and safe, if you take the right steps to protect against known hazards. As the roads and trails become more treacherous, and temperatures continue to drop, keep these few helpful tips in mind before riding:
- Bundle up…but not too much – An important part of winter riding is your clothing. You may think it makes sense to bundle up, but you’re mistaken. While you ride, your body creates heat, causing you to quickly overheat. The key is to wear just enough so you’re slightly chilly before you start riding.
- Prep your bike to hit the wintry terrain – Take steps to prepare your bike for the elements by applying waterproof grease to the chain for protection, ensuring your handlebars have good grips and consider purchasing a snow-friendly rear tire or a set of winter tires with “knobby” tread.
- Light the way – This time of the year, sunlight is at a premium. Place lights – preferably LED – on the front and back of your bike. This will help to ensure that cars and trucks are able to see you in the darkness.
- Fuel up so you don’t burn out – Just because it’s cold outside, doesn’t mean you don’t need to stay hydrated. Eating an energy-packed snack and drinking plenty of water before your ride will help you have enough fuel to go the distance.
It’s no secret that biking is also a great way to stay in shape. Considering all of the hard-to-resist goodies around the holidays, riding your bike a great way to avoid packing on the pounds.
So, rather than staying indoors during the next few months, get out there and enjoy the winterscape of our great city from your bike!

When giving advice for staying safe in winter months, the most important thing to stress is… bring more clothing layers than you think you need.
Bring enough to be warm even if you have to sit around for a while. You never know when an injury or mechanical problem will cause you to be stuck out in the cold, or if the weather will unexpectedly change. This might require wearing a pack or clothing with pockets big enough for spare layers. It can seem like a hassle. But if you’ve ever witnessed someone get injured a few miles from civilization in the winter, it’s motivation enough.
