Not ready for the Dirty Dozen? Join the Spectator Ride!

Cheer on riders as they climb the world’s steepest street

This Saturday, hundreds will gather to ride the Dirty Dozen, a race to the top of Pittsburgh’s steepest hills. Hundreds more will join to watch them attempt this monumental feat.

The tradition started over thirty years ago with Danny Chew, a Pittsburgh native and 2 time winner of Race Across America. The first year, only 5 cyclists dared to attempt the Dirty Dozen. Fast forward to today, hundreds of cyclists from across the nation train year round to compete in this race.

This flowchart can help you decide whether to register for the race or join the spectators ride:

The Spectator Ride

If you’re more interested in deep frying turkey than toning your calf muscles, there’s no need to worry. You can still take part in the festivities with the Dirty Dozen Spectator ride!

The Spectators Ride will begin at Allegheny City Brewing on Foreland Ave. at 10 a.m. this Saturday. From there, fans will bike to the rialto street and suffolk hilltops to watch participants climb. The Spectator Ride will end around 1 p.m. back at the brewery, where riders can end their journey with a much-deserved drink.

Traveling this weekend? Cycling Fusion will be live broadcasting the Dirty Dozen on their Facebook page.

On September 4th, Danny was seriously injured in a cycling accident near Lodi, Ohio. He suffered a spinal cord injury and was paralyzed from the waist down. Danny is currently undergoing rehabilitative therapy in Chicago, and has made it clear that he wants the Dirty Dozen ride to continue this year.

Proceeds from this year’s ride will go towards Danny Chew’s medical expenses. If you would like to make a donation, please visit the YouCaring.com page organized by Danny’s nephew, Steven Perezluha.
