10 Ways to Celebrate Bike Month in Pittsburgh

In celebration of National Bike Month, ride to save money and time; preserve your health, do your part to help the environment, explore your community, and try to incorporate cycling into everyday life.

May 1st will mark the start of National Bike Month and the start of nearly non-stop bike events here in Pittsburgh. Make sure to attend some of the events planned around town and stay tuned to our social media channels and bikepgh.org/calendar as more events are added. 1. Ride your bike

The single best thing you can do to make your city better for biking and walking is to do just that: bike! Find your way around town using Bike Pittsburgh’s award winning Pittsburgh Bike Map. No bike? No problem! Another great feature of this map is its inclusion of all HealthyRide bike share stations throughout the city. Another great resource to start pedaling is our Biking 101, how-to-ride guide, featuring tricks, tips, suggestions, and laws to stay safe, comfortable, and legal while biking.

2. Join the national Bike Challenge

This May, Love to Ride and the League of American Bicyclists are joining forces to present the 2018 National Bike Challenge. Record your rides and compete on monthly individual leaderboards (e.g. Top Rider, Top Commuter, etc). Or you can join a team and have some fun riding and encouraging others to ride too. There are points, leaderboards, and prizes! Learn more.

3. Cinco de Bike-o Helmet Giveaway

Saturday, May 5th

Celebrate National Bike Month with the Brashear Association and Children’s Hospital with special guests, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh, Bike Pittsburgh, Healthy Ride PGH, and Y Creator Space. There will be a helmet giveaway to kids under 13, free family-friendly activities, bicycling information, and free food.

4. *Gear Up For Bike To Work Day* at LEVEL 1: FUNDAMENTALS OF CITY CYCLING

Monday, May 14th

At our 1-hour Level 1 Fundamentals of City Cycling course, you will work with trained cycling instructors to practice and hone in on your biking skills at a friendly indoor environment: The Wheel Mill!

Has it been a while since you last got on a bike? Looking to improve balance or focus on mastering a a particular movement or skill? The Wheel Mill’s indoor venue, and the class’s small-group, drop-in style allow participants to learn and practice city cycling skills in a controlled, protected environment.

When: 7pm – 8pm

5. City Cycling Family Playshop

Tuesday May 15th

Family Playshop is a program presented by the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh (CLP) and designed for parents and children under 5 to play and learn together. Join BIke Pittsburgh at CLP – Woods Run to chat with other parents who bike with or are interested in biking with young children. Exchange information and receive printed educational resources from Bike Pittsburgh. Learn about the upcoming Bike to Work Day on May 18th and our upcoming community events, like Open Streets. Come with questions.

6. Bike to Work Day

Friday, May 18th

Bike to Work Day is a day to celebrate being one of thousands of people in Pittsburgh who rides to work! It’s also a day to give bicycle commuting a try, so join in the fun and bike to work on Friday, May 18, 2018.

We’ll have breakfast snacks, coffee, and friendly faces to get your day moving. Join BikePGH, University of Pittsburgh, Healthy Ride PGH, and other community partners at a Commuter Café on the morning of Friday, May 18th.

BikePGH Members will receive a special gift when they show up at a Commuter Café on Bike to Work Day. This could be you! Consider joining today to secure your membership card and receive all of the great benefits of being a member.

7. Bike to Work Day Happy Hour & Membership Drive

Friday, May 18th

Join BikePGH for happy hour after work on Friday, May 18th! Bike down to the Pittsburgh Food Truck Park near the Millvale Riverfront. The BikePGH tent will be there with free gear for members. You can make our streets safer for people to bike and walk by becoming a member today!

8. Ride with WMNBikePGH

Thursday, May 24th

If you’ve been waiting for the chance to get active on two wheels with a group of welcoming friendly and fun women bikers and have a great time while doing it, these monthly rides are the ticket for you.

BikePGH’s Women and Biking Program is inclusive towards Femme / Womyn / Gender Non Conforming and non binary people of all ages and backgrounds.

9. OpenStreetsPGH presented by UPMC Health Plan

Sunday, May 27th

Grab your walking shoes and come play on car-free streets Sunday, May 27 on our 4 mile route from Market Square to Uptown through the Armstrong Tunnel to East Carson Street in the South Side.

OpenStreetsPGH is a free, all-ages event that’s building healthier, more connected communities. OpenStreetsPGH invites the community to get outside and be active, providing an opportunity to reimagine our streets as places for people, not just cars.

Join us for fitness workshops, kids activities, shopping, brunch, community arts, and special promotions presented by over 100 local businesses and organizations.

10. WMNBikePGH: Bike Maintenance Basics – Level 1

Wednesday, May 30th

Womxn of all skill levels will enjoy this demonstration-based workshop. Learn how to maintain your bike for smooth riding and build community with other Pittsburgh womxn!

If you ride a bicycle, then you need this class! This class is an informative presentation that will teach you how to lube a chain, fix a flat tire in record time, and make other minor adjustments to your bicycle. No experience necessary!

WMNBikePGH: A program for womxn, femmes, non-binary, and gender non-conforming.
