PennDOT will be holding a public meeting to go over intersection improvements along a stretch of Second Ave in Oakland/Greenfield, a road owned by the state. The meeting is in coordination with the soon-to-open Hazelwood Green Development.

In addition to the following intersections, the scope of the project includes the I-376 Bridge over Bates St and Bates Street itself.

Some of these intersections are especially interesting to people on bikes and on foot, and may have opportunities for improvement.

Second Avenue/Bates Street/Technology Drive

Oakland’s two closest entrances to the Eliza Furnace Trail are near this intersection, so it’s common to find bicyclists and runners near here as well as on Bates St. The intersection is particularly difficult to cross, even using the existing crosswalks.

Second Avenue/Irvine Street/Greenfield Avenue/Saline Street

This intersection contains the notorious “chute,” a section of jersey barriers and a sidewalk that connects the Eliza Furnace Trail to the Junction Hollow Trail. This has been the bane of basically every trail user for a long time.

Second Avenue/Irvine Street/Hazelwood Avenue

The Hazelwood Green Developers built a mile-plus long protected bike lane through their development that will emerge at this intersection. While the bike lanes are not yet open as the City installs some safety measures under a railroad bridge, once open, they will provide a safe connection from Hazelwood to the Hot Metal Bridge and Eliza Furnace Trail.

Second Avenue/Hot Metal Street

There’s a bus stop and a convergence of trails near this intersection.
