Bike Pittsburgh mourns with the congregants of Tree of Life, New Light, Dor Hadash and the rest of our Pittsburgh family.
We have many members who live in Squirrel Hill and have friends and family who worship at the Tree of Life synagogue. We know many of you do as well, and that some of you reading this may have lost someone in this attack.
Our hearts are heavy and we are overcome with sorrow for everyone who has been personally affected by this hate crime. This tragedy has hit us hard and we stand with the victims, their families, the Jewish community, and all of those who suffer as a result of white supremacy and hatred.
Our mission is transforming our streets and communities into vibrant, healthy places by making them safe and accessible for everyone to bike and walk, but we know that not everyone gets the opportunity to feel safe on our streets.
Whether walking home, commuting to work and school, or arriving at a place of worship, our community should be granted that safety. And we acknowledge that it’s not just cars that are infringing on our sense of security.
Many of us are looking for ways to make a difference in light of this hate-fueled massacre. We feel this resource from the Southern Poverty Law Center is a great place to start: Ten Ways to Fight Hate: A Community Response Guide.
In love and solidarity,
All of us at Bike Pittsburgh
