More bike parking shows a growing support for active transportation
On April 17, 2021, the amount of bicycle parking on the Northside grew! The Northside Leadership Conference and Walk Ride Northside (WRNS), its bicycle and pedestrian advocacy volunteer committee, was awarded a grant from the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s Neighborhood Initiatives Fund last year to purchase and install bike racks at small businesses around the Northside. WRNS is approaching this recent bike rack installation effort as an expansion of its We Like Bikes! bike-friendly business program, which launched in June of 2019.
WRNS installed 8 bike racks at 6 different small businesses in a variety of Northside neighborhoods, and has enough funds to most likely double that number later this year once other locations are identified. The bike racks installed this past weekend are located at:
- City Fresh Pasta (Chateau)
- Café on the Corner (Marshall-Shadeland)
- Young Brothers Bar (Brighton Heights)
- Observatory Hill Deli (Observatory Hill/Perry North)
- Threadbare Cider and Mead, 2 racks (Spring Garden)
- Penn Brewery, 2 racks (Troy Hill)
Like the mission of its We Like Bikes! program, the installation of these bike racks is a unification of small business and an increase in equitable transit and mobility. Five out of six of these locations had no prior bicycle parking on premises, and each of these neighborhoods is severely lacking in bicycle parking.
Be sure to take a ride to these small businesses and show your support. Now there is a safe place to tether your bike!
