Thousands celebrated Mini-OpenStreetsPGH in Hazelwood on July 25th

Mini-OpenStreetsPGH was a Success!

On Sunday, July 25th, 2021 OpenStreetsPGH visited Hazelwood for the first time! This year’s event was held as a “mini-route” and will be the only OpenStreetsPGH program of the year (don’t worry, we hope to be back to a full schedule next summer).

OpenStreetPGH temporarily closes streets to car traffic and invites Pittsburghers to reimagine their streets as places for people, not just cars. The event is organized by BikePGH, a registered 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit, who works on behalf of the Pittsburgh community to make the city safe and accessible for everyone to bike and walk.

Presented by UPMC Health Plan, OpenStreetsPGH is one of the city’s most beloved summertime traditions and gives people of all ages and abilities the chance to walk, bike, run, and roll along completely car-free streets.

Additional support is provided by generous sponsors MoveForwardPGH, Walnut Capital, Motional, Port Authority, Aurora, Hazelwood Local, Protohaven, Cannondale, Pittsburgh City Paper, and Public Source.

Celebrating a new route visiting Hazelwood

Two miles of streets within Hazelwood were opened for safe, distanced outdoor recreation, and three activity “hubs” along the way provided entertainment, activities, and more. Participants jumped into free fitness classes at our wellness hub, learned how to bike at our kid’s hub, grabbed food from local vendors, and enjoyed a variety of fun activities hosted by local organizations.

Community partners Hazelwood Initiative, Art Excursions Unlimited, Playful Pittsburgh Collaborative, Hazelwood Local, Center of Life, Duquesne Center for Integrative Health, Andre’s Food Truck, and many more hosted activities and tabled at OpenStreetsPGH.

A free shuttle brought community members to the event from the Hazelwood & Glen Hazel neighborhoods.

OpenStreetsPGH is organized by BikePGH

BikePGH is committed to improving the health and quality of life of Pittsburgh through increased access to safe bicycling and walking facilities, and by creating opportunities to bike and walk for all.

“OpenStreetsPGH invites the community to reimagine public spaces, something we saw the incredible necessity of during the pandemic. As the world starts to get back to normal, we are excited to present OpenStreetsPGH as a mini-event where people of all ages can get outside for some socially distanced recreation, enjoy a day of car-free fun on city streets, and check out some awesome bike infrastructure along the way”

Scott Bricker, Executive Director of Bike Pittsburgh.
