The next generation of bike commuters at the Obama Academy

With pandemic concerns causing transportation difficulties, and fuel and automobile prices becoming an increasing burden on personal budgets, bike commuting presents an elegant solution to these and many other problems.

Active forms of transportation such as biking and walking are also shown to have myriad physical, mental, and emotional health benefits. With the aim of creating the next generation of bike commuters, BikePGH has partnered with Pittsburgh Barack Obama Academy of International Studies to teach five students from various grades safe cycling habits.

Students who completed the class received their very own bicycle from BikePGH’s educational fleet as well as a front and rear light set , Kryptonite Keeper U-lock, helmet, and the BikePGH Biking 101 Guide and Bike Map – all courtesy of the Operation Illumination program presented by StarKist.

Based on the success of this program, BikePGH will be looking for ways to bring bikes and commuting accessories to youth and adults in the region who are interested in trying bike commuting for the first time.  For more information please contact education@bikepgh.org
