Partnership helps kids develop their biking skills and learn the building blocks for better, safer riding
After a year delay due to remote schooling, Pittsburgh Public Schools launched the long-awaited Strider All Kids Bike program with assistance from BikePGH and UPMC Children’s Hospital. BikePGH assisted the program with their bike education know-how and mechanical expertise while the Children’s Hospital donated helmets for all students and provided lessons on proper helmet fit and injury prevention.
The All Kids Bike program believes that learning to ride a bike is the single most important skill a child can learn in their PE class. According to Jordan James a community programs educator from Children’s Hospital “the program is made to meet the kids where they are at and allows them to continue to develop their biking skills as well as learn the building blocks for better, safer riding!”
Strider makes this possible through the donation of fleets of Strider 14X push bikes and associated curriculum. Strider’s 14X push bikes also come with a simple pedal conversion kit that allows students to matriculate to pedaling once they’ve learned basic balance and steering skills. According to Pittsburgh Montessori PreK-5 teacher Lauren Semega, “The students at Pittsburgh Montessori are thriving as they learn to ride bikes. It is extraordinary to see their confidence and excitement levels build with each opportunity on the bikes. Many students are learning to ride for the first time as others are eager to demonstrate their advanced skills.”
This fall we launched the program with early grades at Pittsburgh King K-5 and Pittsburgh Montessori PreK-5 with over 150 students learning to stride, glide, and ride! We look forward to expanding to other Pittsburgh Public elementary schools in the new year, and bringing the joy of riding bikes to many more kids across the city!
