BikePGH is seeking a skilled storyteller invested in our mission to create written and visual content to help generate community support and awareness for the organization, campaigns, and events. This position works in close collaboration with all departments and is responsible for overseeing all aspects of outward-facing strategic communications (~70% of time) and marketing (~30% of time). The ideal candidate will have established professional writing/editing experience, and confidence in communicating bicycle and pedestrian issues to a broad audience.

Title: Communications & Marketing Manager
Position: Full-time, Exempt
Target Start: April 2022
Reports to: Advocacy Director 
Mission: BikePGH is transforming our streets to make biking and walking commonplace for all Pittsburghers in order to improve our quality of life and reduce the harmful effects of car dependence in our communities.
Salary: $45,000 – $50,000 annually, depending on experience
Benefits: 

  • Medical, vision, and dental insurance through UPMC. Employees pay $50/month for their individual premium (dependent and spouse premium paid entirely by employee);
  • 20 days of paid time off annually – combined sick and vacation time; 
  • 11 paid observed office holidays per calendar year;
  • 401(k) benefits with a 3% employer match after six months;
  • Employee paid supplemental short-term/long-term disability insurance through Aflac;
  • $15/month cell phone reimbursement. 

Organizational Culture & Working Conditions:

  • Work is typically performed in an open office setting but currently working a hybrid schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic;
  • Our office is located in Lawrenceville and shared by a staff of 10; close to major bus lines with indoor and covered outdoor bike parking on-site;
  • Professional but relaxed office atmosphere where employees are encouraged to be their authentic selves;
  • No corporate dress code requirements;
  • On average 40 hours per week;
  • Working hours are often M-F 9-5 though working hours can be adjusted;
  • Occasional weeknights and weekends are required in order to attend events; 
  • Travel within the community will be required when safe to do so;
  • Ample opportunities for professional development and skill-building; 
  • Exchange time off for weekend hours or hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek is available to ensure a healthy work-life balance.

Essential Functions and Duties: 

  • Communications
    • Oversees organizational communications, including the blog, press releases, newsletter, websites, media/social media, outreach materials, and other special projects;
    • Develops, implements, and evaluates communications plans to reach various audiences in Pittsburgh, including core members, potential members, and the broader community;
    • Collaborates in honing and channeling the voice and brand of BikePGH;
    • Writes content on the topics of biking & walking (focusing on advocacy, community events, and education);
    • Produces e-newsletters using a CRM (We currently use Mailchimp) with the ability to maximize open and click rates;
    • Creating and editing engaging content across our WordPress websites;
    • Comfortable acting as the spokesperson for the organization, when appropriate;
    • Uses testing and data analytics to determine the effectiveness of marketing and communications initiatives.
  • Marketing
    • Manages marketing organizational-wide events including but not limited to; OpenStreetsPGH, PedalPGH, Bike to Work Day, and  WMNBikePGH Biking Summit;  
    • Collaborates with appropriate staff to develop and implement marketing strategies for all organizational fundraising campaigns; 
    • Manages external advertising (print and digital) for all programs;
    • Oversees hiring contractors for creative projects including graphic design, photography, videography projects;
    • Assists with forecasting and design for all merch organization-wide;
    • Coordinates video production across our programmatic focuses. This may include writing scripts, reviewing content, coordinating with freelancers, and publishing on all platforms;
    • Annually reviews marketing budgets for each department and ensures marketing projects are on budget throughout the year. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Stellar oral, written, and presentation skills;
  • Strong writing and editing skills; 
  • Familiarity and experience with local and national media outlets as well as social media (Including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube);
  • Strong attention to detail, time management and organizational skills;
  • Self-starter that takes initiative, and also good at collaborating with a team;
  • Have experience in email newsletter production, social media, and graphic design;
  • Well-versed in WordPress,  Adobe Suite, and Google Apps.
  • Demonstrated passion for creating a better city through biking and walking;
  • Knowledge of bicycle and pedestrian issues, urban design, planning, transportation, and politics.

Experience & Education Requirements:

  • Three or more years of Communications or professional writing/editing experience;
  • Graphic design experience preferred but not required;
  • Associates or bachelors degree preferred.

Physical Demands: 

  • Be able to and comfortable with holding an extensive conversation with co-workers and the general public;
  • Varied activities include sitting, reaching, bending, lifting up to 30lbs, pushing/pulling, walking, or assisted walking via wheelchair or mobility device.
