BikePGH’s FREE Bike Light Giveaway: Operation Illumination!

Thanks to the generous support of Edgar Snyder and Associates, we’ll have several more bike light giveaways this year!

On Tuesday, May 17, 2022 BikePGH distributed over 70 front and rear light sets to unlit riders outside of Obama Academy as part of Operation Illumination, which this year is proudly presented by Edgar Snyder & Associates. This event was one of many as part of Bike Anywhere Week festivities.

Operation Illumination is an initiative run by Bike Pittsburgh with the aim to keep riders seen and therefore safe while riding. Not having a bike light can be a barrier that prevents people from riding safely at night, or worse, can be perilous if they’re continuing to ride unlit. For more than 10 years, we’ve been able to distribute free bike lights to people who need them. Read our best advice for riding at night here!

“This is one of my favorite events we do at BikePGH,” said BikePGH’s Business Relationship Manager, Christine Yockel. “I don’t hesitate to volunteer for Operation Illumination whenever I can. The direct impact of this program is immediately seen, literally, with every pair of lights that increases rider visibility and on every smiling face as they ask ‘Free lights, really?’ as they approach the table.”

Along with lights, this year BikePGH is able to provide helmets as well, thanks to the generous support of Edgar Snyder & Associates. Brad Trust, a lawyer for Edgar Snyder & Associates, and a passionate bike rider himself, stood in a full suit and (bicycle) tie, smiling on the corner and waving a reflective “Free Bike Lights” sign to attract those riding past him on the corner of N. Highland Ave. and E. Liberty Boulevard.

“Edgar Snyder & Associates is excited to join forces with BikePGH—our organizations are both safety and community oriented—so this partnership makes total sense,” said Brad Trust, Partner from Edgar Snyder & Associates. “Through their advocacy, training, and outreach, BikePGH has made Pittsburgh a safer city and an overall better place to live. Our firm is proud to help them continue this work through Operation Illumination.”

Our friends at POGOH were also there, fixing bikes and slinging sunnies, helping to spread the word about their recent rebrand and addition of electric bikes, sure to be a total game-changer for many Pittsburgh residents.

There will be at least 3 more opportunities to catch Operation Illumination in 2022:
