Long sought safety improvements coming to a speedy neighborhood street

VIRTUAL MEETING MONDAY SEPTEMBER 26, 6pm Register here

While the speed limit on Stanton Ave between Lawrenceville and East Liberty is set at 25mph, one would be hard pressed to see someone actually driving that speed through the neighborhood. In fact, you’re more likely to find someone driving aggressively past the Sunnyside Elementary School than driving responsibly.

That is about to change with the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure’s (DOMI) Stanton Ave Complete Street Phase 1 project. The project is set to include multiple traffic calming elements and “climbing” bike lanes on the uphill sections of the road. Stanton Ave is identified in the Bike(+) Master Plan as a street in need of improvement.

According to DOMI: “The traffic calming elements for the project include speed cushions and ‘SLOW curve’ warnings with transverse pavement markings.”

What’s a Speed Cushion?

Speed cushions operate like speed humps but, according to DOMI, “have been designed in partnership with the Department of Public Safety to better accommodate emergency vehicles responding to calls for service.” They are essentially speed humps, but have cutouts spaced for Pittsburgh’s emergency vehicles to pass unimpeded, but still effectively slow down passenger vehicles.

The bicycle climbing lanes will include buffered bike lanes in the uphill direction on each side of the hill, as shown in the below map. The climbing lanes will provide dedicated space for people riding bikes and scooters to get up the hill and make it easier for drivers to pass these slower moving vehicles.

Lastly, there will be pedestrian improvements to create safer crossings at key intersections along the mostly residential corridor.
