This Friday, continue the fight for safe streets by celebrating Susan’s life
On Friday, October 21st at 4:30pm at the corner of Forbes and South Bellefield, please join Susan Hick’s former friends, students, teachers and colleagues who will gather to raise a glass in her memory and to raise awareness for the continuing traffic violence on Pittsburgh’s streets.
A driver killed Susan at that corner on October 23rd, 2015 when she was riding her bike home from her job at the University of Pittsburgh. The University of Pittsburgh has since done a lot of work to make cycling safer on campus, including changes to Forbes Ave and Bigelow Blvd, but much more can still be done to wrestle our public spaces back from car domination.
This year they will rededicate the Ghost Bike roadside memorial, replacing the original bike with a newly painted one.
A ghost bike is a roadside memorial marking the location where a person riding a bike was killed or seriously injured. Started in St Louis, the concept was popularized worldwide by a Ghost Bike installation here in Pittsburgh.
All are welcome: come join and honor Susan and meet each other in person.
Susan’s Friends and Family suggest that donations in her memory can be made to any of these three places:
- Susan M. Hicks Memorial Fund Scholarship (REEES, University of Pittsburgh)
- Free Ride Pittsburgh
- Bike Pittsburgh
