RECAP: BikePGH in DC for the National Bike Summit

We hit the road to advocate for change on the national level!

Last week, some of our BikePGH staff attended the League of American Bicyclists National Bike Summit in Washington, DC along with advocates, educators, and innovators from across the country. We participated in workshops, group rides, an alleycat, and led a panel discussion with Dashcam for Your Bike and Velo.ai. It was truly energizing to hear ideas regarding bike safety, accessibility, history, and technology from people from around the country. Cycling intersects with countless issues and changes lives in so many ways. It’s not just about recreation – it’s about equity, opportunity, transportation justice, health, livability, clean air, the environment, our future, our youth, and sustaining LIFE.

Making our voices heard on Capitol Hill

It was also great to meet with other PA advocates and innovators like National Youth Bike Council who is paving the way for youth leaders, Agile Rascal Bicycle Touring Theatre who is using the arts to advocate for the environment and safer streets, BikeCo, LLC who is a multinational bikes distributor with interest in the advocacy that keeps things going, and our friends from Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia.

We met with our elected leaders on the state and federal level to make the case for a safer streets bill, e-bike rebates, and truck side guards to help prevent vulnerable road user fatalities. Thank you to the League of American Bicyclists for providing resources to help us get the most out of this opportunity.

Thank you to the offices of Rep. Summer Lee, U.S. Senator Bob Casey, and John Fetterman for meeting with us and giving your attention to these issues and the work we’re doing to make our streets safer and more accessible for all.

We are incredibly fortunate to have had this opportunity on Capitol Hill to advocate for the positive change on our streets that saves lives and gets more people biking and walking!
