Tens of thousands walked, biked, and rolled from the North Shore to South Side via Market Square
On Sunday, May 28th, OpenStreetsPGH kicked off the 2023 season, filling Pittsburgh streets with people-powered activity on a truly perfect day! Along with 100+ partnering businesses and organizations, Pittsburghers had a great time movin’ and groovin’ on car-free streets. Here’s a quick recap of the fun, and don’t forget to check out the incredible photos by photographer Murphy Moschetta up on our Flickr page. Also, tag your friends in our Facebook album!
This 4-mile route traveled from the heart of the North Shore into the Golden Triangle via the Andy Warhol Bridge, through a magically car-free Armstrong Tunnel, and over the iconic 10th Street Bridge into the bustling East Carson St business district! OpenStreetPGH temporarily closes streets to car traffic and invites Pittsburghers to reimagine their streets as places for people, not just cars. The event is organized by BikePGH, a registered 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit, who works on behalf of the Pittsburgh community to make the city safe and accessible for everyone to bike and walk.
✨Fun for everyone at the Hubs
📍 The Kids & Family Hub, located at N. Shore Dr & Art Rooney Ave, featured a Learn to Ride course from our Education Team, a mini BMX course from The Wheel Mill, and fun-filled activities from local organizations including the Pittsburgh Steelers, Carnegie Science Center, Eat’n Park Team Smiley, Pittsburgh Safe Routes to School, Makeshift Bikes, a performance by O’Ryan the O’Mazing, and more. On the way to this Hub, guests also enjoyed stopping by Riverlife’s simply surreal ChalkFest viewing area.
📍The Health & Wellness Hub in Market Square featured fitness classes for all ages and skill levels hosted by the YMCA, a cooling station from presenting sponsor UPMC Health Plan, delicious shaved Kona Ice, face time with Pittsburgh’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure, POGOH, Free Ride, Harvie, and more.
📍The Arts & Culture Hub on E. Carson St between 19th and 20th St was a great time to shop local vendors and artists, such as the art by Some Penguins Fly and Squirrel Hill Design and Craft. Walking into the area, guests were awed by the giant purple hands from SQUONK Opera’s Hand-to-Hand installation. We also enjoyed live music from local artists Kenny Stockard, Stone Throwers, and Wade Anthony Jr, curated by Keystone Artist Connect, plus activities and giveaways from ASCEND Climbing, Pittsburgh City Paper, Goat Fest, DipJar, and more.
