Help Plan a Street Mural in front of the CLP Woods Run Library

We’re working on a Street Mural with the CLP Woods Run Library and DOMI

Help brainstorm what Pittsburgh’s next street mural will look like!

Street mural art has emerged as an effective way to help calm traffic and to create vibrant places on top of large areas of asphalt. A street mural not only adds useful public art to an area, it also helps cool the ground temperatures preventing the black asphalt from absorbing all that sun. There are two other street murals in Pittsburgh that have been used for this purpose. The first one was installed in Friendship at a confusing intersection, while the most recent install was in Bloomfield in locations around Friendship Park.

Through a grant from AARP, we are collaborating with the Northside’s CLP Woods Run Library, the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI), and artist Ashley Kyber to develop a street mural to act as a welcome mat to the library. DOMI has nearly completed the “Trail to Mairdale” Neighborway and traffic calming project on Woods Run Ave between the Chateau Trail and Riverview Park. The mural will be painted inside a triangle shaped section of road notorious for enabling drivers to speed around the bend, but will soon be car free. DOMI’s project also added many pedestrian friendly features around this intersection to further calm traffic.

We want your input!

We are scheduling three input sessions to develop a concept for the street mural. Each session will be at the CLP Woods Run Library, where the artist and CAPA students will guide attendees through brainstorming ideas for the mural. This iterative process will yield a design to be painted as a welcome mat to the Library. You’ll also have a chance to see concepts at the CLP Library and to vote on your favorite ideas throughout the process.
