Construction is set to begin Spring 2024 for this dedicated bike and pedestrian pathway that will also include a public art component

Great news: DOMI recently announced the successful acquisition of a construction contract for the upcoming Davis Avenue bridge project! Engineering for the new bridge concluded in Spring 2023, and on-site construction is scheduled to commence in Spring 2024. The construction phase is set to span from Spring through early Fall 2024.

The Davis Avenue bridge reconstruction project will reconnect the Brighton Heights neighborhood to Riverview Park. The previous bridge dated back to 1898, but despite its historical significance, the bridge lacked modern safety and maintenance features, and its capacity for heavy vehicles was limited. In 2009, the City made the decision to demolish the bridge.

The new Davis Avenue bridge will serve as a dedicated bike and pedestrian pathway, incorporating contemporary architectural designs, materials, and insights while paying homage to the aesthetic of its predecessor.

This highly anticipated project is going to be a great connector for biking and walking in the area! That’s wonderful news overall, because as we know, when Pittsburgh’s bicycling infrastructure increases, more people feel safer to ride. Also, about a quarter of Pittsburgh households are reliant on walking and biking infrastructure for day-to-day life. And finally, when more of our neighbors are walking, we are increasing our ability to make meaningful human connections with one another. It goes without saying that investments in biking and walking infrastructure, such as the Davis Ave Bridge project, are essential for the accessibility, livability, and connectedness of our communities.

Public art on the bridge

Another exciting component of the new Davis Avenue Bridge project is the incorporation of a public art initiative celebrating the bridge’s reconstruction. This art project, made possible by the City of Pittsburgh’s Percent for Art program, boasts a budget of $30,000.

The inclusion of a public art component in the Davis Avenue Bridge adds an extra layer of excitement to the project, making the bridge more than just a functional structure—it will be a meaningful and interactive component that we can appreciate in our public space.
