Our BikePGH Business Member community gathered on Tuesday, November 14 at the Lolev, just down the street from our office in Lawrenceville, to celebrate all that BikePGH has accomplished in 2023 and the business members and sponsors who helped us along the way.
We appreciate the love and support we receive from each of these partnering businesses. There’s no business network quite like our BikePGH business network. We come together quarterly and truly make connections throughout the city (pun intended). A few of our members really stood out with the change we were able to create together. Keep reading to learn more about this year’s standout business members and how they are helping to make Pittsburgh better for people who walk and bike.
Bike-friendly businesses help create a more livable Pittsburgh
The support of every one of our Business Members is crucial, but we especially like to recognize those who go above and beyond to help us accomplish our mission. The leadership of these businesses sets an example of how a business should invest in the health of our city and how a business can help create a safer, more accessible place for all Pittsburghers. During this year’s celebration, BikePGH presented awards to these esteemed businesses and organizations:
New Business Member of the Year – ACTION-Housing
We’ve consulted with ACTION-Housing before on bike parking in their buildings and we were able to pull together a larger scale project with help from Cannondale and some grant funding.
Our Education Department, in partnership with staff from Action Housing, were able to get bikes for fifteen young adults aging out of the foster care system and into transitional housing with the My Place program at Action Housing. This means we changed lives by providing them with safe, reliable transportation that they can repair themselves and gave them the knowledge they need to do that. This extends their range of mobility throughout the city and, in turn, their freedom.
Bike Industry Member of the Year – Cannondale
Our contacts at Cannondale have been supportive of BikePGH in a variety of ways throughout our relationship. This year, we approached them with our plans for the My Place program and they jumped on the opportunity to help with deeply discounted bikes, free helmets, and a handful of other commuter necessities. They also donated multitools and pumps to the WMNBikePGH GAP Campout and the Summit. And our asks of them are always met with the “Let me see what we can do” attitude that nonprofits love in a sponsor.
Business Member of the Year – Millie’s Homemade
BikePGH has always had a close relationship with Millie’s, from WMNBikePGH rides to the shop, to the treats during our Virtual PedalPGH in 2020, and having the Millie’s Truck Girls at the Finish Line Festival whenever we can. We were thrilled when the opportunity came this year that they not only wanted to sponsor the map, but we also had an ice cream collaboration available in scoop shops. And it was delicious — if you didn’t get a chance to try Rocky Ride this spring, it’ll be back in shops again Spring 2024!
Organization of the Year – Open Up
Open Up’s mission is to teach mindfulness tools through movement practices and interactive arts while centering people living with disabilities. We applaud their dedication to creating inclusive spaces that meet each person where they are and bring the joy of movement to all who enter their studio, and any space their instructors enter. Specifically with BikePGH, Open Up has hosted the absolutely most welcoming and calm and patient yoga nights for our WMNBikePGH Program, to keep our bodies moving through the winter months, and has provided the Good Morning Yoga at the WMNBikePGH Summit.
Small Business Champion – Velo.ai
Velo.ai began as a “pandemic passion project” responding to the need for something to protect the more vulnerable road users. And they’ve been sponsoring BikePGH since before they began recruiting Beta Testers. Now, CoPilot, the smart bike lights that developed as a result of their data collection and prototypes, is amassing a wait list of eager consumers, ready for the first lights to ship imminently!
