Together, we transform streets to transform lives: Part 2

The goal of BikePGH’s work is to make it safer and easier for Pittsburghers to get around the city by foot and on wheels. Our 2023 campaign focuses on stories of people whose daily lives have been improved thanks to BikePGH’s advocacy for increased and improved mobility infrastructure.

Your support helps make even more of these stories a reality!

Grassroots advocacy is a key tactic for achieving change. BikePGH supports neighborhood bicycle/pedestrian committees as they work with elected officials and city departments to get improvements to local streets.

BikePGH played a key role in supporting the neighborhood groups working for traffic calming on Stanton Avenue. These groups achieved their goal of getting a climbing lane installed on this important road, connecting Stanton Heights to Lawrenceville, Morningside, and Highland Park / East Liberty. By slowing down car traffic and clearly demarcating lanes, the Stanton Avenue bike lane and traffic calming makes the streets safer for all road users, residents and visitors alike!

Sara’s Story

Sara lives in Stanton Heights and regularly walks with her preschooler to the playground at Sunnyside Elementary School. Their stroll became stressful and dangerous when they reached the intersection at Stanton Avenue, as drivers routinely disregarded the 25 mph speed limit. The installation of bike lanes, speed humps, more visible crosswalks, and signage has dramatically slowed down drivers on Stanton Avenue, improving safety for all.

The speed humps and other changes have been a huge safety improvement. It feels like drivers are actually seeing us crossing the street and treating Stanton Avenue like a neighborhood street.

Sara

The safety and well-being of our families depend on these transformations in our infrastructure. Thanks to the BikePGH-supported neighborhood bike/pedestrian committees, Sara and her neighbors can now enjoy a safer and more joyful walk to the playground and school! Every resident, especially children, should be able to safely enjoy their neighborhood, whether walking, biking, rolling, or playing.

Be a part of the transformation!

BikePGH’s year end campaign is our most important fundraiser of the year as we work toward our goal of raising $50,000 by Dec 31st. Your donations allow us to continue advocating for more and improved mobility infrastructure, like bike lanes and pedestrian walkways and intersections.
