Share the love and skills of biking by becoming a League Cycling Instructor (LCI)

The 2022 LCI Seminar cohort with League Coach Neil Walker and assisted by LCI’s Fred Zelt, Diana Hildebrand, and Ted King-Smith.

Join a network of thousands of nationally certified instructors across the country

League Cycling Instructors (LCIs) are certified to teach the League of American Bicyclist’s Smart Cycling curriculum to help people feel more secure riding a bike, to create a mindset that bikes should be treated as a vehicle, and to ensure bicyclists know how to ride safely and legally.

The 3-day seminar is where prospective bike safety educators will receive training on cycling instruction using the Smart Cycling curriculum presented by the League of American Bicyclists. People who complete the seminar will join the nearly 7000 certified League Cycling Instructors across the nation as cycling educators. The 2024 Pittsburgh LCI seminar will take place from April 12th through April 14th at the BikePGH office in Lawrenceville. Those interested in attending should contact education@bikepgh.org.

Learn to teach bike-handling and group riding skills

LCI Karen Brooks leads a Confident City Cycling class for the WMNBikePGH program.

The intensive twenty-hour seminar will focus on mastering and teaching the concepts and skills of safe vehicular cycling. Each candidate will present and evaluate each other’s presentations on topics from The League’s Smart Cycling curriculum. Topics included principles of traffic law, signaling and lane positioning, gear and accessories for all-weather riding, proper helmet fit and usage, and many others. Every candidate will also learn to set up and teach The League’s on-the-bike Parking Lot Drills and lead a group ride.

Become eligible to teach BikePGH’s City Cycling and other classes

As a League Cycling Instructor, you will be eligible to assist BikePGH’s educational programming as a paid instructor and be able to teach private lessons with The League of American Bicyclists’ best practices and insurance. Many local LCIs have gone on to create their own coaching businesses and clubs (we see you Pittsburgh Major Taylor Cycling Club, Women at Work Cycling Club, Cycology LDB, and Ruach Bicycle Club–to name a few!)

Meet other cycling advocates, enthusiasts, and instructors across the region
