Take a car-free adventure from Market Square, through the Armstrong Tunnel, across the 10th St Bridge, to lively E. Carson St
Spring is here again in Pittsburgh, and with it so is another exciting season of OpenStreetsPGH! To kick off this year’s 3-event series, we are starting with a fan favorite- the classic Downtown to South Side route! Explore Downtown, the Armstrong Tunnel, 10th St Bridge, and the South Side, on Saturday, May 11th from 10am – 2pm.
Hosted by BikePGH and presented by UPMC Health Plan, OpenStreetsPGH is Pittsburgh’s fastest-growing free event series that opens miles of streets for people of all ages and abilities to explore our neighborhoods while biking, walking, and rolling.
Just Announced: OpenStreetsPGH May 11th Route
The first route of our full OpenStreetsPGH season takes you on a journey free from cars for a glorious 2 miles– From bustling Downtown Pittsburgh through Market Square, up Forbes Ave through the Armstrong Tunnel, and across the 10th St Bridge to the scenic business district on East Carson St in South Side.
- Where should I go? While you really can enjoy the event from anywhere on the route, the “Activity Hubs” are a great place to stop and connect with the community. BikePGH’s Health & Wellness Hub in Market Square features fitness classes for all ages and skill levels hosted by the YMCA and a cooling station from our presenting sponsor UPMC Heath Plan. From there, follow the route to two of Pittsburgh’s defining features– an iconic tunnel and bridge– through the Armstrong Tunnel, then over the 10th St Bridge to enter the South Side. Be sure to check out the historic architecture and unique businesses along East Carson Street as you make your way to BikePGH’s Arts & Culture and Kids & Family Hubs between 19th and 21st for fun-filled activities from local organizations and a Learn to Ride course from BikePGH’s Education Team.
- What will you see & find along the route? There will be yoga, dancing, shopping, biking, walking, children’s activities, running, lots of food, and more. Be sure to check out the event schedule as the date gets closer.
- How do I get to the event? However you’d like! We strongly suggest walking, riding a bike, or taking public transit. Check out details & directions on the Getting Here page.
- How do I get around the road closure if I need to drive somewhere during the event? Unlike other events, OpenStreetsPGH does not require a completely continuous street closure. At each event, car drivers will be able to cross the route at several open vehicle intersections along each route. Here is the complete list of intersections that will be crossable via car:
- Downtown Car-Crossable Intersections:
- Forbes Ave & Wood St
- Forbes Ave & Smithfield St
- Forbes Ave & Grant St
- Forbes Ave & Crosstown/Sixth St
- 10th St & Second Ave
- South Side Car-Crossable Intersections:
- 10th St & Bingham St
- E. Carson St & 18th St
- Vehicle access is also available from S 10th St to the 900 (and lower) blocks of E. Carson St
It is recommended to use Waze or Google Maps to help navigate road closures.
I live along the route. What do I need to know?
Streets will begin closing Saturday, May 11 at 9 a.m. and will start reopening around 2 p.m. ⚠️ Cars parked along the route must be moved before 3 a.m. on Saturday morning or they will be towed. ⚠️ “No Parking” signs will be placed along the route on Thursday.
I have a business/organization along the route. What do I need to know?
First and foremost, we would love to have you participate as an Activity Partner! We encourage establishments located directly along an OpenStreetsPGH event route to extend their storefronts onto the sidewalk or street during the event hours to provide an activity for participants. Activities range from offering special discounts to event attendees or having a fun activity in-store to pop-up parklets, and everything in between. Click here to submit your Route Host application by April 30th.
Secondly, please see the road closures/no parking information above and let your staff and customers know about the changes and towing. Thank you!
