Will Pittsburgh emerge from our Bronze status?
Way back in 2010, Pittsburgh was awarded a Bronze Bicycle Friendly Community Status (BFC) from the League of American Bicyclists (LAB), a DC-based national-level bicycle advocacy organization.
The LAB has an application process where they review municipalities and rank them from the scale of Bronze to Diamond. Municipalities who apply are rated on a comprehensive number of factors from bike commuter and crash rates, to education and community events, to number of bike lanes, racks and trails. This BFC status is one of the standard metrics in the US for how seriously a municipality is working to make their community safe, fun and friendly for residents who ride, or want to ride, bikes.
Pittsburgh hasn’t asked to be reevaluated since renewing our Bronze status in 2014. A whole lot has changed in the past decade, and this is where you come in!
To gain a better understanding of the City’s application the LAB has developed a community survey to gauge how residents feel about bicycling in their community, and what needs fixed.
The survey is open to anyone familiar with or interested in bicycling in Pittsburgh. The LAB wants to hear from residents, local area bicyclists, and bike advocates about your experiences and perceptions of bicycling in Pittsburgh.
The survey should take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete, and will be open through Tuesday, October 15th, 2024. The Bicycle Friendly Community award results are expected to be released in December.
