Level-Up (or start) Your Advocacy for Safer Walking & Biking

If you are part of a community advocacy group interested in biking and walking safety, or if you’d like to start such a group, you need to have something your group can work on together that will lead to tangible change for your community — a campaign!

Of course, that’s easier said than done. You might already be running into some challenging questions:

  • There’s so much that needs to change! What do I focus on?
  • How do I get started?
  • Who can help me?
  • Who has the power to do something about this and how do we get them to act?

Or perhaps you’ve been running a campaign already, and it could use a boost of creativity and energy.

Wherever you are on your advocacy journey, we’re here to help!

Our Advocacy Training Series is designed to help advocates of any level experience (including no experience) craft a winning advocacy campaign and give you the support you need to be successful.

January 22nd, 6 – 7:30pm (Virtual): Choosing Your Next Campaign

This 90-minute workshop will help you pick a campaign to work on that is achievable, and you’ll get to create a clear, actionable description you can use to start telling others about it.

February 19th, 6 – 7:30pm (Virtual): How to Influence the City Budget & Win Concrete Change

This workshop will train you how to effectively engage with the City’s budgeting process so that the Mayor and City Council are more likely to dedicate funding to make the change you want. This isn’t the only way to get the change you seek, but it’s proven effective year after year.

April 21st, 6 – 8pm (Venue TBA): Identifying Decision Makers, Allies, and Tactics

Learn to use a tool called a “power map” to brainstorm, visually organize, and identify connections between the people who have the power to make the change you want and the allies who can help influence them. We’ll also explore different tactics that work better or worse for different targets.

June 9th, 6 – 7:30pm (Venue TBA): Using Walk/Bike Audits to Make Your Case For Change

Our Summer Advocacy Network Gathering will focus on how you can use walks and bike rides to gather information about issues and opportunities in your neighborhood that can help to inform your campaign and make the case for change to decision makers.

July 14 (tentative date): Assessing Your Strengths & Weaknesses

Learn to use a tool called a “SWOT Assessment” that will help you identify your campaign’s Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT). This assessment can help you clarify appropriate tactics and next steps to win your campaign.

October 1 (tentative date): Effective Communication & Storytelling for Bike/Ped Advocacy

Learn a “formula” and tips for effectively communicating about your campaign to build support and influence your targets. You’ll get lots of practice talking about your campaign in a supportive group so it feels easier everywhere else.

You can come to just one training, a few, or get the full experience by attending all of them.

Or if you can’t wait, check out our Grassroots Advocacy Toolkit, campaign planning workbook, and library of recorded workshops.
