Through Operation Illumination our goal is to make biking at night safer for everyone. So far we’ve hosted three bike light giveaways and gave out almost 150 sets of lights(and even some helmets) to unsuspecting unlit bicyclists. We’re excited to announce we will be hosting one last bike light giveaway this year on Wednesday, October 26. The festivities will begin at 6:30pm at a secret pop-up station north of the city. Our lights are charged and our pumpkins are carved, and we can’t wait to help riders light up the night.
Did you know that riding a bicycle without a light is a ticketable offense?
When riding after sunset, Pennsylvania state law requires riders to use, at minimum, a front light that emits a white beam. However, while not strictly required, a rear red light is nearly essential for maintaining visibility on the road. White and/or red blinking lights further announce your presence to drivers and pedestrians — look for ones with an irregular blinking pattern.
As daylight becomes scarce during the fall/winter months, extra visibility from bike lights can help keep you safe. Bike lights come in many different shapes & sizes and the choices can be overwhelming. Fear not, BikePGH has a few suggestions to narrow down your choices.
