Bob Karlovits from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review wrote a really cool article about riding the riverfront trails. It’s directed at newbies who may want to give it a try, but still inspires even the seasoned cyclist to go and enjoy one of Pittsburgh’s greatest assets. I rode on the South Side trail this weekend, and it was so packed I was wondering when we’ll be getting some trail widening projects. My only question to Bob is: Why is it so bad when routes “sometimes plunge, into valleys cut by big rivers and small streams.” That sounds like a dream.

Pittsburgh sometimes seems like one of the worst bicycling areas in North America.
The streets often are lousy. Routes drop, sometimes plunge, into valleys cut by big rivers and small streams. Shoulders on roads? It’s a celebration if you find one.
Yet, it remains a cool place to ride. Neighborhoods often are connected by little streets auto drivers ignore. Those communities change greatly from mile to mile, making touring a constant treat.
For riders who don’t enjoy rolling with traffic, trails have developed around the three rivers to provide an easy tour. They are basically flat, too, so the “it’s too hilly” complaint is run over by knobby mountain bike tires.
A variety of routes and activities makes it easy and fun to spend a day on the bike.
