Long Ride? Here’s How to Dill with the Burn

Try Dill Pickle Juice as a Recovery Aid

Yes, there’s a 35 foot Heinz Pickle balloon floating over the Rachel Carson Bridge. No, you’re not just hungry. But what does that have to do with bicycling?

Well, as reported over a dozen of sources including Livestrong pickle juice can be a great recovery drink for people who bike. Who knew?

• It can be used to reduce cramping
• It’s good for rehydration
• Pickle juice replaces nutrients lost while sweating
• It’s a natural source of antioxidants and other nutrients
• And even soothes sunburn?

So, bike down to Picklesburgh for the pickle juice drinking contest this weekend and park at the BikePGH bike racks at the Downtown end of the Rachel Carson Bridge.

Finally, in celebration of Picklesburgh weekend, BikePGH Membership Manager, Jane Kaminski, is supplying you with her recipe for delicious dilly beans. Enjoy!

Delicious Dilly Beans (or Pickles)
1:1 ratio of water to white vinegar
Fresh garlic
Hot pepper crushed
Salt
Grape leaf
String beansAdd salt to the liquids and bring it to a boil. Put all remaining ingredient in a jar (or jars) with a grape leaf at the bottom of the jar for crispness. Pour the hot liquid over the beans.Close the jar tightly and place in the fridge for at least 48 hours and up to 2 months.

Once you’ve finished the pickles, enjoy the juice after a long ride!
