How ‘Bike Friendly’ can a Pittsburgh University Get?

Point Park University is taking some big steps to use biking as a way to spark excitement at the workplace. Point Park employees had lots of fun joining us on our June #LunchLoop, and they’ve got a PedalPGH Workplace Team lined up for August 27th. We got the opportunity to interview them about PPU’s on campus initiatives to promote healthy lifestyles through its Staff Wellness Plan and student bike share program.

Lisa Stefanko, Vice President of Human Resources

“While our group all changed into more athletic clothing for the #LunchLoop, several of the participants stayed in their work attire. We didn’t break any land speed records but had a wonderful time looping the city in a stress-free environment. Personally, I was concerned about biking with all of the traffic around, but the guides ensured that all participants knew where to go, what to do, and how to stay comfortable in traffic.”

“Being more physically active is one way to contribute to better personal health, and the Lunch Loop is an easy way to get out and move!”

Amanda Bretthole, Human Resource Generalist

“I really enjoyed the opportunity to get out and take a great ride through the city on my lunch break. I’m not a super experienced rider, so I don’t think I would ever feel comfortable doing this loop on my own. In a group though, with professionals riding with us, I felt safe and comfortable riding through busy downtown streets during lunch hour traffic. It was great to be out and about and ride along the river, by the fountain, and through the cultural district. I felt proud to live in a city that encourages novices to get outside, and that has an organization like BikePGH. I’ll definitely be there for the next one!”

Bikes as Employee Culture at Point Park University

The staff at Point Park University believe that increased energy, a positive attitude, and exercise are key to a healthy lifestyle. To this end, Point Park University introduced a Staff Wellness Plan called OnPoint in 2017 where staff can earn points for participating in community service, activity challenges, and educational events such as nutrition awareness and exercising for beginners. Staff members who earn 100 points receive a discount on their insurance premiums for an entire year!

Point Park University not only encourages its staff to engage in physical activity, but also its students. Students at PPU can check out bikes and helmets for free thanks to Point Park’s United Student Government. With Point Park’s rental bikes, members of the Point Park University can explore the city for transportation and recreation by bike.

Point Park University is in the process of submitting a Bike Friendly University Application to the League of American Cyclists. BikePGH has confidence that their application will make them the next *certified* Bike Friendly University in the ‘Burgh!
