BikePGH Business Members Come Together to Celebrate

BikePGH Executive Director Scott Bricker addresses the crowd before awards are presented

After last year’s hiatus, BikePGH Business Member Awards returned in 2021

On November 17th, the Bike Pittsburgh Business Member community gathered together (for the first time since February 2020!) at Trace Brewing in Bloomfield to thank and celebrate the businesses who contributed to our work and supported our mission through this rollercoaster of a year.

With the help of our business members and corporate sponsors, BikePGH was able to continue our work advocating, educating, and building community through a modified season of virtual, hybrid and in-person engagements. As the world keeps changing around us, we truly recognize how much of a privilege it is to have such dedicated support from local businesses and organizations that believe in this work and help us to keep moving forward year after year.

BikePGH was proud to honor four bike-friendly businesses with awards for their contributions to biking and pedestrian advocacy in 2021:

Business Member of the Year: Walnut Capital

Walnut Capital has been a business member since 2013, has supported our OpenStreetsPGH events since 2018, and this year they were nominated and selected for this award due to their generosity and partnership not just at Open Streets but in hosting a brand new hybrid event – Bike Anywhere Week – which marked our return back to some sense of normal after our pandemic hiatus.

BikePGH presents Proto Haven with their award

Small Business Champion: Protohaven

Protohaven went above and beyond to partner on our programming for this year – they hosted a custom engagement activity at July’s mini OpenStreetsPGH event, hosted our Women & Non-binary program members for a workshop, offered new opportunities to our membership, and have been genuine champions of what BikePGH aims to achieve in our community.

University of Pittsburgh Staff pose with their award

Organization of the Year: University of Pittsburgh

The University of Pittsburgh was nominated and selected this year for being such a driving force and contributor behind the third annual Bike to Campus Week of events, introducing their students and faculty to this important work through a variety of initiative across departments, for consistently working towards sustainability, and for building the kind of community we all want to live in.

New Business Member of the Year: StarKist

StarKist technically joined BikePGH as a business member towards the end of 2020, but we’re counting it! Upon joining they immediately jumped right into making a difference by supporting our vision of an expanded Operation Illumination program. Thanks to their support BikePGH was able to give away not only over 400 light sets, but 50 high quality u-locks and helmets to cyclists in need this year.

Special thanks to our Business Members

We are so grateful to have been able to gather together once again to recognize all that we’ve bee able to accomplish together. Having the support of our Business Members has meant the world to our small team as we kept working towards our mission of making biking and walking safe and commonplace for Pittsburghers. It’s never too early to start talking about the year ahead — our 20th Anniversary year is going to be pretty special! Email Christine to schedule a meeting to talk about how your business can get involved!
