Celebrate Black History Month in Pittsburgh with these Organizations
To celebrate Black History Month, we wanted to share local ways to get involved with organizations that are founded by or are lead by people of color. These organizations get people out walking, biking, using the trails, and making Pittsburgh a better and more livable community.
Did you know… Black Girls Do Bike was started right here in Pittsburgh by Monica Garrison who is also on BikePGH’s board? Their community has grown to international heights and they continue to get people out biking every day! Join them for a ride!
Did you know… Women at Work Cycling Club was recently started by Robin Woods from Pittsburgh. As a Shero, Robin leads rides for all skill levels. Everyone is welcome to join her rides as she encourages people to get out and bike!
Did you know… Girl Trek, a walking for health movement for African-American women and girls that is grounded in civil rights history and principles through walking campaigns, community leadership, and health advocacy has a chapter in Pittsburgh. They also offer a great Black History Bootcamp and want people to get out, walk and feel better!
Did you know… Pittsburgh has its own chapter of the Major Taylor Cycling Club and they go for rides all the time! They also have a 10 week long youth program, Major Force, that empowers Pittsburgh youth through safe cycling skill building.
Did you know… Pittsburgh has a super cool STEM education bike club, Ruach Bicycle Club who’s goal is to provide an enjoyable and one-of-a-kind education and biking experience for youth through workshops, mentoring, riding, and hands on STEM programming!
There is so much more going on too in Pittsburgh to celebrate Black History Month, but we wanted to make sure that you’re all aware of these wonderful things that you can get involved with! What did we miss? Let us know and we can feature it on the BikePGH blog!
