Karen Brooks

Board Member | Board Member Since 2012

Just after graduation from Chatham College with a degree in Environmental Studies, Karen (she/her) got sucked into the vortex of the bike industry, and aside from a couple years at the East End Food Co-op with Mac Howison, has not been able (or willing) to escape since. She worked at various Gatto Cycle Shops from 1996 to 2001, going from shop rat to store manager, then later at Rotating Mass Media, publishers of Dirt Rag and Bicycle Times, from 2004-2014. She was the founding editor of Bicycle Times. Currently she is enjoying a career as a freewheeling freelancer for all kinds of bike-related companies and institutions, including serving as Carnegie Mellon University’s bike consultant.

Karen and Dan Yablonsky worked together to develop Bike Pittsburgh’s City Cycling educational program. Teaching these classes, along with mountain bike clinics for The Wheel Mill and others, has become her most rewarding two-wheeled activity.

Karen enjoys just about all forms of fun on a bicycle, although her first love is mountain biking.

She can be found at events such as the Trans-Sylvania Epic mountain bike stage race and the Dirty Dozen as well as cruising the trails of Frick Park. Bikepacking is a current obsession. But above all, she enjoys traveling the city streets by bike and marveling at the transformation of Pittsburgh into a truly bike-friendly city.

Susan Petersen

Secretary | Board Member Since 2012

Shortly after moving to Pittsburgh in 1989, Susan’s (she/her) darkest fears about the status of biking in Pittsburgh were confirmed when the city was named worst city for biking. So the tremendous progress of recent years is even more thrilling and Susan is honored to be able to contribute to making Pittsburgh more bike friendly.

Susan and her husband Stefan Frembgen can be seen biking around the East End where they live and own a business. They also enjoy bike touring. Memorable trips include the Great Allegheny Passage-B&O Canal trail to Washington, DC; and a family tour with Adventure Cycling in Colorado. They have three children, Ingrid, Marco & Renée. A native of Michigan, Susan has degrees from the University of Michigan and the University of Wisconsin.
