Five Week Closure of the South Side Trail to fix “Eagle Lake” starts on Oct 31

To allow crews to quickly do the work, there will be no official detour available

Friends of the Riverfront has spearheaded the effort to fix a section of the South Side Trail that has been flooding for the past few years. There will be a 5-week full closure with no detour starting on Monday, October 31, so be sure to plan accordingly!

One potential unofficial alternate route between Homestead and the Hot Metal Bridge, that does not have much elevation gain, is to use a set of steps on Baldwin Rd near Sandcastle that will take you to the sidewalk across the Glenwood Bridge. From there, you can ride Second Ave to the Hazelwood Green bike lanes to connect to the Hot Metal Bridge and the Eliza Furnace Trail. Here is a RideWithGPS track.

Thanks to Friends of the Riverfront for your work in getting this done!

A message from Friends of the Riverfront regarding the construction:

The long awaited fix to the ponding issue on the Three Rivers Heritage Trail/Great Allegheny Passage segment in Baldwin Borough is happening! The construction is expected to begin October 31st and will take 5 weeks, during which time the Trail will be closed.

Construction on the segment is to eliminate water pooling along the trail near Hay’s Eagle Viewing Area. It is informally known as “Eagle Lake” and “Lake Wonky Feather.” While Friends of the Riverfront implemented flooding solutions previously, they were only briefly effective. In order to fix the problem, we are installing a pipe under the trail to move the water towards the river.

Unfortunately, no detour will be posted during the construction. We exhausted all potential detour routes and found that there is no safe way around this segment of the trail that we are able to recommend. Do not trespass through or around the construction site – it is dangerous and illegal.

We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time, and we are excited to see trail users walk, ride, and roll through this part of the trail without getting their shoes wet!

We will post project updates on social media and on the Eagle Lake Project Page on our website.
