Join us at our Bike to Work Day popups – May 19
Spring (and first summer) has come early in Pittsburgh, just in time for Bike to Work Day 2023. If warmer temps don’t say we should be hopping on our bikes more often to ride around town, we don’t know what does! Bike to Work Day is the perfect time to give bicycle commuting a try, so join in the fun and bike to one of our AM or PM Cafés in four Pittsburgh locations!
On your way to work, swing by Oakland or Downtown between 7:00am – 10:00am. Later in the PM, swing by Sly Fox or Spirit for snacks and a happy hour drink on the house. It’s all happening on May 19th! Get the full schedule here and read on for more details on how to be a confident bike commuter and why it’s such a great choice to start replacing car trips on your daily commute to work.
Why Bike to Work?
- It’s Good for You
- Movement in your day is one of the main ways to complete the stress cycle and to feel good mentally and physically. It helps to clear the mind, as well as keeping our hearts and muscles strong! Activate your muscles, heart, and lungs as you roll through the Pittsburgh streets (and hills) with a breeze on your face.
- It’s Good for the Earth
- Cycling is better for our Earth, as it reduces carbon footprints, reduces air and noise pollution, and cuts down clogging our streets with traffic.
- It’s Good for your Wallet
- Commuting by bike saves you money in more ways than one! It’s less cash that you have to spend on gas (and we all know it’s not getting any cheaper), you’ll have less wear and tear on your vehicle, and parking is free for bikes! Save $$$ and the planet!
Prepare for Bike To Work Day
- Be sure to have your route ready.
- You’ll want to know how you’re getting around town, to one (or more!) of our Cafés, and to work. BikePGH’s brand new Pittsburgh Bike Map No. 9 is about to hit the streets! In the meantime you can see Map No. 8 here, or check out our video on How to Plan Your Bike Route! Knowing your plan will help you feel more confident and will provide a more enjoyable ride. Google Maps is also a great resource and usually has construction detours listed – be sure to choose the cycling option!
- Pack the things you need for your ride and your day.
- Just like planning your route, you’ll want to check the weather and your schedule for the day ahead. Is it calling for rain? Don’t forget a rain jacket and cover for your bag. Is it going to be warm and full sun? Don’t forget your sunglasses, sunblock, and maybe a change of clothes for work if you think you’ll get sweaty. Planning to work from home the next day and need to bring your computer home with you? Be sure to bring extra storage on your bike or a bigger backpack to carry everything. Here is a helpful guide with tips and tricks for a successful commute.
- A-B-C Quick Check
