Mayor Gainey Announces Public Meetings to Preview 2024 Draft Capital Budget

The Capital Budget is one of the main sources of funds for building and repairing infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists.

One of the most reliable ways to make Pittsburgh better for biking and walking is to make sure that projects that improve biking and walking are included in the Capital Budget.

A Capital Budget is the way that a city’s mayor prioritizes and funds the things they want to see built. One can think of a Capital Budget as the conscience of a mayor. The things that they think are important are the things that get funded.

It’s our job as neighborhood advocates to help make the case for continuous and expanded funding for safety improvements on our streets. One way to do that is to make sure that the Mayor knows that these types of projects are important to you.

Mayor Gainey has published his First Draft Capital Budget for 2024, and his office has scheduled four public meetings to present and talk with communities about what could be changed before it’s finalized.

In short, the more people that go to these meetings and talk about the need for safe streets improvements such as traffic calming, complete streets, bike lanes, trails, steps, curb ramps, crosswalks, and bump outs, the more it will help ensure these life-saving measures get funded.

Dinner will be provided, so bring a date!
