Market Square in Downtown Pittsburgh is about to undergo a people-first transformation, a change many have been wanting for years
Set to break ground this April 2025, the Pittsburgh Planning Commission has given the green light to a new vision for Market Square. This is great news!
The new design combines nature, art, and a strong focus on creating a pedestrian-friendly environment, featuring more trees, seating, and enhanced lighting to create a welcoming vibe for workers, visitors, and Downtown residents alike.
The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership (PDP), which is leading the project, sees it as an important step in revitalizing Downtown. With 3.1 million visitors in 2024 alone, Market Square is a hotspot in Downtown Pittsburgh, and with the new design and fewer cars, it’s set to become even more inviting.
One of the key elements of the makeover is the reduction of car traffic
“As the heart of Downtown Pittsburgh, Market Square has had a long history of being Pittsburgh’s premier public space, even throughout its numerous transformations throughout the decades. The PDP is excited about honoring that legacy in Market Square’s next iteration, one which swaps out vehicular parking for increased space for pedestrians, outdoor dining, public events, and civic pride.”
Bruce Chan, Senior Director of Urban Design, Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership
The final “car-lite” design keeps a pedestrian-first mentality while still maintaining access for deliveries and emergency vehicles. Traffic will be limited to the north end of the square, near the Original Oyster House, while the southern side near PPG Place will be shut off entirely. For special events, moveable and retractable bollards will allow for the complete closure of the square, turning the entire space over to pedestrians.
This is something our OpenStreetsPGH series has been envisioning in the space for years.
The new design also improves ADA access
The project also includes the removal of the outdated parking lane and cobblestone streets, which were neither ADA-compliant nor ideal for accessibility. In their place, smooth concrete and granite pavers will make the space easier to navigate for everyone.
This transformation is a win for Pittsburgh’s public spaces, turning Market Square into a more dynamic, people-centered spot for special events and day-to-day happenings. Stay tuned, construction starts this April 2025.
Again, this is great news for Pittsburghers and visitors alike!
