Highlighting key moments and future goals as Pittsburgh’s bike and pedestrian advocates work toward lasting change
We’re only two months into 2025, and Pittsburgh’s movement for safe biking and walking is already building momentum for a year of successful advocacy! Read on for some highlights of what our bike/ped advocacy network has been up to and how you can get involved.
A little cold doesn’t stop us!
January 30th is the average coldest day of the year here in Pittsburgh, and we celebrated once again with our 2nd Annual Coldest Day of the Year Advocacy Ride & Social. We started this tradition last year as a way to lift up how Pittsburghers ride, walk, and roll in all weather, year round. As such, we need infrastructure that keeps us safe all year too!
This year, advocates from all over the City and County gathered in the Strip District for a biking tour of infrastructure projects planned for the area led by local advocacy group Strip Safe Streets followed by food, drink, and fellowship at Aslin Beer Co. Fortunately, the actual coldest day of the year (maybe decade?) had already happened the week prior, so we weren’t too frigid. Shout out to those who committed to the bit of “pretend like it’s warmer than it is” by wearing tropical shirts and shorts.
Using City Budgets to Win Concrete Change
Just a few weeks later, we held a virtual training about how advocates can use Pittsburgh’s annual budgeting process as a way to move forward infrastructure projects that make our streets safer for biking, walking, and rolling. Just about any tangible improvement you can think of will need to be paid for somehow, and the City’s budget is what determines how.
We were joined by advocates from neighborhoods across the City, and everyone walked away with next steps they can take to make progress on their campaigns for safer streets.

Up Next: Let’s get strategic!
If you have changes you want to see made in your neighborhood to make walking and biking more safe, accessible, and enjoyable, then you need a strategy!
Our annual Strategies for Winning Bike/Ped Advocacy Campaigns training on April 5th at the Kingsley Association will show you how to make a clear, step-by-step plan for making the change you want. And we feed you lunch!
Here’s what a previous training participant had to say:
“The full-day session flew by and I left with a clear idea of how to move forward and connect with others throughout the city who share my concerns. The workbook activities and small group discussions helped reinforce key concepts and break goals into actionable pieces. I would recommend this session to anyone who wants to create better walking, biking, and safety conditions where they live, work, or play.” ~ Laura Zurowski
