A Bridge for People

As we previously wrote, the original Davis Avenue Bridge was built in 1898 and was quite innovative for its time. However, it lacked modern safety features and could no longer support heavy vehicles. The City demolished it in 2009.

Fast forward to today: the new Davis Avenue Bridge embraces modern engineering and sustainability while honoring the historic character of its predecessor. By designing the structure exclusively for pedestrians and bicyclists, load requirements were significantly reduced, making it more cost-effective, more environmentally friendly, and more suitable for the surrounding landscape.

The Davis Avenue Bridge is an investment in accessibility, livability, and community cohesion. When we build for walking and biking, then more people are able to get around safely and conveniently without a car. Remember that here in Pittsburgh, about a quarter of households do not have a motor vehicle, and rely on transit, biking and walking for daily life. So, the Davis Avenue Bridge is a big win for our city’s future and its people.

This type of infrastructure also strengthens community bonds by making human connection easier and more natural. In fact, one of our BikePGH staff, Thom Harr, remarked that when he rode through this week, he immediately felt welcomed as he was greeted by several neighbors out exploring the bridge.

Nearby residents also told us that they are already feeling the benefits, like BikePGH Board Member Jennifer Reitzell.

“Everyone is excited for the restoration of a safe and accessible connection to Riverview. It has removed a barrier to access one of our City’s fantastic green spaces and is encouraging other people to check out our neighborhood!” — Jennifer Reitzell, BikePGH Board Member and Brighton Heights resident.

We’re also thrilled that the Davis Avenue Bridge will be a highlight of this year’s PedalPGH! Both the 62-mile and 40-mile routes on Sunday, August 24, 2025 will showcase this stunning new piece of infrastructure.

Whether you’re riding in PedalPGH or taking a stroll through Riverview Park, make sure to get out and experience this beautifully reconnected route!
