Two major business districts came alive as thousands biked, walked, rolled, connected with neighbors, and created community at BikePGH’s final car-free event of the year
On the final Sunday in July (which turned out to be a bright and sunny day with some obligatory Pittsburgh humidity and a quick rain shower), OpenStreetsPGH showed Pittsburghers what our streets could look like if more space was dedicated to people and community, rather than cars.
Participants rode through the lively streets of the Strip District via Smallman Street, enjoying the historic sights and engaging with hundreds of unique businesses and vendors. The 3.5 miles car-free route then continued onto Butler St in Lawrenceville, made famous for its revitalization and transformation into a vibrant hub for arts, dining, and nightlife.

The day was joyful! Hosted by BikePGH and presented by UPMC Health Plan, OpenStreetsPGH is Pittsburgh’s favorite active event series that opens miles of streets for people of all ages and abilities to explore our neighborhoods and support local businesses while biking, walking, and rolling.
OpenStreetsPGH shows what is possible when we start thinking outside the confines of the car to create community. Motorists may dominate our city streets every day, but people walking, biking, and rolling have just as much of a right to have safe and convenient ways to get around our city.
Thank you to everyone who made this event possible: activity partners, sponsors, volunteers, kids biking area staff, production team, our incredible part time and full time staff, and a VERY special thank you to our public safety officials and Safety Team.
