ICYMI: New bike lanes on S 18th in Pittsburgh’s South Side!

A great win for safer, more connected infrastructure for all road users

S 18th St now has a new climbing bike lane and traffic calming! At least, most of the way up the hill. The first half is almost done being installed, but the second half after Crossman St will have to wait for next year due to unexpected utility work.

As part of its 2025 suite of Vision Zero implementation projects, the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) implemented targeted safety improvements on S 18th St between E Carson St and Monastery Ave to alleviate the safety issues that put this section of S 18th St on the High Injury Network (HIN).

S 18th St is on the City’s High Injury Network

Members of the South Side community asked for, advocated for, and won these upgrades. You can connect with local South Side Bike/Ped Advocates, please see the South Side Smart Streets Facebook Page.

Take a ride on the new bike lane with us; watch the video below!

  • The new bicycle “climbing lane” gives people riding bikes some space as they ascend toward Mt Oliver and other southern neighborhoods.
  • Note that as of the filming of this video, “Part II” was delayed due to a utility project, but the full climbing lane to the top of the hill will be in soon.
  • These treatments were identified in the City’s Bike(+) Plan as well as the Critical Sidewalk Gaps program, and have been a priority for neighborhood residents and advocates for a number of years.
  • For more information about the project, and what’s been done, please see the City’s project Engage Page.
