Weigh in on Allegheny Forward – the County’s first Comprehensive Plan since 2008

Allegheny forward flyer says in large print We want your input.

This is your chance to shape the future of Allegheny County

It’s been since 2008 when Allegheny County last created a Comprehensive Plan – something that the State requires every county in Pennsylvania to prepare and adopt.

From the team: Allegheny County is updating its Comprehensive Plan, a bold, long-range framework designed to guide for growth and investments to help the county thrive over the next 25 years. This plan will shape the future of local communities by aligning land use, infrastructure, housing, culture, open space, and economic development priorities across all levels of government. More than just a vision, it will build upon existing planning efforts to deliver a clear set of actionable steps, grounded in collaboration and designed for real impact.

This new plan is called Allegheny Forward, and will set policies for development, conservation, and economic initiatives.

Astute readers will probably note that the City of Pittsburgh is also going through their own Comprehensive planning process called PGH2050, which will ideally inform the overall County plan. Concurrently, there is also a County Climate Action Plan in the works, that will develop in step with this overall Comprehensive Plan.

Whew. So now what?

The County wants to hear from you

Right now, there are three ways to provide input: a survey, a map, and proposing a big idea.

The survey will help prioritize issues that municipal leaders have identified – everything from infrastructure to transportation, to culture. Next, the map exercise will allow you to pinpoint issues that you see, while the final exercise will allow you to propose a big idea solutions.

While the County doesn’t own very many streets, they can influence funding priorities (such as safe streets), regional trail development, active transportation planning, transit, and policies such as Complete Streets or Vision Zero. Being sure to mention these values, will help add weight to their importance.

Please take a moment to share your thoughts with Allegheny County. They’ll be taking responses until March.
