Pittsburgh advocates assemble a temporary parking protected bike lane to demonstrate their safety benefits
This is the Final Chance to Legalize Parking Protected Bike Lanes in 2026
A bill to “legalize” Parking Protected Bike Lanes has been introduced in every session of the PA Legislature since 2017. Each time, it has passed the Pennsylvania House with overwhelming bipartisan, and even unanimous support. Then it gets stuck in the Senate.
Currently, municipalities in Pennsylvania lack the ability to easily install “Parking Protected” bike lanes and pedestrian plazas. These types of bike lanes use parked cars to physically separate pedestrians and people on bikes from car traffic. However, due to a technicality in the PA Vehicle Code that requires cars to be parked within 12” of the curb, Pennsylvanians are currently denied this life-saving tool, that has been used successfully in states and municipalities across the country.
Communities across the Commonwealth have spoken up. Thousands of residents have signed petitions. Municipal planners, engineers, mayors, and local officials have all said the same thing: they need this change to build safer streets.
This bill will save lives. It’s been languishing too long. Pennsylvanians want this.
Join us and our fellow advocates in Pennsylvania in calling on our state legislators to save lives by passing HB 291. One life lost is one too many.
