New Northside on-street bike infrastructure connects neighbors, visitors, and attractions

Crews have been busy putting in some bike infrastructure around town.  Many readers noticed the shared lane markings, or sharrows that were installed last week in the Northside, representing the first on-street bike infrastructure for the neighborhood.  On top of increasing the visibility of cyclists along this popular corridor, the goal is also to help people on bikes navigate the safest streets to access the myriad Northside attractions, the North Shore Trail, Point State Park, and the neighborhood.  In the future, the City intends to add a city-wide wayfinding sign system that will complement these markings.

When complete, this new piece of infrastructure will create a clearly marked bikeway from the riverfront trail past many Northside attractions, into the neighborhood and up toward Riverview park – one of the four major city parks. The shared lane markings will begin on Tony Dorsett Dr, right when you exit the bike/ped path of the Ft Duquesne Bridge and North Shore Trail, directly between Heinz Field and PNC Park.

From there, the sharrows continue up Martindale, past the Clark Building, then along Merchant to Ridge Ave, right next to the Community College of Allegheny County, the National Aviary, and the Children’s Museum.  The route continues through the Allegheny Commons West Park along W. Ohio St, where they will become official bike lanes.  Brighton Rd will then take you into the neighborhood on shared lane markings, where they will eventually become full on bike lanes as you begin to ascend the hill.  The bike lanes will take you to Wood’s Run Rd, which will take you to Riverview Park and the Observatory.

Pop City already reported on how the Northside got some much needed on-street cycling infrastructure.

On W. Ohio St in Allegheny Commons Park, crews marked out the future bike lanes that will go past CCAC and the National Aviary
