Traffic Alert for Sunday, August 25
An estimated 3,000 bicyclists will take to Pittsburgh’s streets this Sunday, August 25 for the 26th Anniversary of UPMC Health Plan Pedal Pittsburgh. Participants will explore Pittsburgh’s neighborhoods on an urban bicycling tour visiting Pittsburgh’s best parks and bicycle-friendly streets from 7:00am to 3pm.
In order to alert motorists and ensure the safety of the riders, Bike Pittsburgh, the organization that coordinates the event, has issued the following traffic advisory and road safety reminder.
Road Safety Reminder
Pennsylvania law requires that motorists give at least four feet between the vehicle and the bicyclists when passing. Bike Pittsburgh, encourages drivers to review Pennsylvania’s ‘Safe Passing Law’ and to remember that forcing a cyclist off the road is a crime that can lead to legal charges.
Traffic Advisory
East Carson Street, South Side – will have a high volume of bicyclists from 7am to 3pm.
Strip District and Liberty Avenue – Liberty Avenue will see a high volume of cyclists from 31st Street in the Strip District to Liberty Avenue in Bloomfield.
Beechwood Boulevard in Squirrel Hill – There will be a high volume of bicyclists traveling toward Greenfield. Motorists are encouraged to use additional caution from 9:30am to 3:00pm.Fifth Avenue in Oakland – There will be a higher than average number of cyclists on Fifth Avenue at Bigelow Boulevard to Bayard St from 10:30am until 3:00pm.
EVENT DETAILS
Since BikePGH took over PedalPGH in 2012, the event has raised more than $1 Million for bicycle and pedestrian advocacy in Pittsburgh. Proceeds fund BikePGH, a registered 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit, that works on behalf of the Pittsburgh community to make the city safe and accessible for everyone to bike and walk.
