2024 Bike Month Wrap-Up

Thank you for a successful Bike to Work Day & May Membership Campaign

Every May, we host programs and events for National Bike Month while we run our big “May Membership Campaign.” The goal is always to get a certain amount of new BikePGH members signed up, and to celebrate current and renewing members.

As we reflect on the success of this year’s Bike Month festivities, we are reminded of the importance of the work we do together to foster a more vibrant and more connected community and to reduce car dependence. We especially want to thank all of the Sustaining Members who joined, upgraded, and renewed with us. Your support and participation is what drives this movement forward, and for that, we thank you.

Thank you to the 119 Pittsburghers who joined or renewed their membership in May!

Hundreds of folks stopped by our three Commuter Cafés on Bike to Work Day, which kicks off our summer season of events, classes, bike rides, training, and more. Seeing so many seasoned and new bike commuters out on Thursday, May 9th was great. This year we offered a really snazzy limited edition giveaway item (BikePGH x Cotopaxi), and we’ve been loving seeing you wearing them out in the wild! Shoutout to Convive Coffee, Smashed Waffles, and Coffee Outside Pittsburgh for keeping everyone fed and caffeinated, as well as our sponsors and partners from POGOH, Raising Canes, Pittsbuergh Innovation District, and the University of Pittsburgh.

If you missed signing up as a member this May, don’t worry! You can support BikePGH any time by renewing / signing up here.

…and shoutout to our surprise guest

Mayor Ed Gainey grabbed a POGOH and joined us for Bike to Work Day– He and his hardworking staff pedaled with us on a bike ride downtown to our Market Square Commuter Café. It was a lot of fun, and it was also really good to see the Mayor take the time to understand how it feels to ride our streets from a bike rider’s perspective.

“In order to build a city where all of our residents feel safe and welcome, we have to talk to all of our residents. We have to meet them where they are and walk (or ride) a few miles in their shoes.”

Mayor Ed Gainey

Free bike lights & safe riding classes for Pittsburghers

Our dedicated Education Manager also hosted Operation Illumination and Confident City Cycling classes this past Bike Month. With the support of our seasonal staff, we gave 70 front and rear lights out to residents and commuters in Downtown! We have another Operation Illumination event coming up in July in Homewood, stay tuned to our blog and social media channels for more details.

Confident City Cycling provides all the skills and knowledge to safely commute in Pittsburgh. Our City Cycling curriculum covers basic and advanced cycling skills, and best practices for solo and group riding, and includes a culminating group ride that utilizes the best of local bicycle infrastructure. We had a great turnout at the first class of the year and look forward to providing this FREE class to more Pittsburghers throughout the summer: Check out all of the upcoming classes and click here to sign up

THANK YOU again to everyone who supported us during Bike Month. Your support is vital to the success of our movement:

BikePGH is transforming our streets to make biking and walking commonplace for all Pittsburghers in order to improve our quality of life and reduce the harmful effects of car dependence in our communities.
