A year of BIG infrastructure wins, new education resources, and crowd-favorite events… and your support made it happen!
Take a look back at the big stuff BikePGH accomplished in 2025, from major infrastructure victories and powerful grassroots advocacy, to a successful OpenStreetsPGH season and resources that helped even more Pittsburghers travel safely and confidently on our streets.
Especially as we get into 2026 and we continue working to make biking and walking safer, easier, and more joyful, please consider supporting us with a donation today!

Advocacy is at the heart of all we do
- 2025 started off with Pittsburgh being named a Silver-level Bike Friendly Community from the League of American Bicyclists, after years at the Bronze-level.
- A ton of new bike infrastructure went in:
- Most significant was the new Penn Ave bike lanes in the Strip, helping connect residents coming from the eastern neighborhoods to the Strip and Downtown.
- Northsiders celebrated the completion of the Davis Ave Bridge reconnecting neighbors to Riverview Park.
- In the South Side, the hard fought S 18th St traffic calming (including a climbing lane) was installed halfway up the hill, with the second half expected in the Spring, once utility work is complete.
- New bike lanes on Pitt’s Campus after a spate of pedestrian fatalities activated a student-led traffic calming campaign.
- Forbes/Braddock Intersection updates completed the new bike lane that resulted from the Fern Hollow Bridge collapse.
- Check out more updates here!
- All of this new infrastructure and traffic calming seems to be having an effect, resulting in a hugely significant two-year decrease in reported crashes and injuries.
- DOMI has also completed several pedestrian projects, including traffic calming, replacing missing/broken sidewalks, and repairing steps. One big win that resulted from BikePGH’s advocacy alongside community leaders was the installation of new sidewalks, a crosswalk, and speed humps near The Promise Center of Homewood that were specifically designed to make the intersection safer for kids to get from school to after school care. We look forward to a new sidewalk we helped advocate for alongside Chartiers Playground in Windgap that will be installed soon.
- Pittsburgh Walks – the coalition of pedestrian advocates we brought together last year – has trained 60+ volunteers for Safe Sidewalks Crew, walking 600+ blocks, and collecting data to help DOMI make safety improvements for our sidewalks… Join an upcoming training!
- Our push for Civic Engagement:
- Welcomed 3 new Bike/Ped Committees in Friendship, Penn Hills, and Moon Township to our Advocacy Network. These resident-driven groups advocate for new traffic calming and pedestrian and bike improvements, as well as activate their neighbors to weigh in on the Capital Budget to ensure that safe streets projects are well funded. We support their efforts through monthly sessions that culminate to a full-day Winning Campaigns training.
- Helped residents understand where the Pittsburgh Mayoral Candidates stand with our Bike Walk Vote! survey.
- Launched a Street Harassment Survey to better understand the unique struggles of Pittsburgh’s women and non-binary bike riders.
- Led to a successful Week Without Driving, in partnership with Pittsburghers for Public Transit, Access Mob Pittsburgh, and Age-Friendly Greater Pittsburgh.
- Partnered on World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims in McKeesport
- Significant policy wins:
- We contributed an Amicus Brief for a case in front of the PA Supreme Court that ended up with a decision affirming bicyclists’ right to take the lane in PA when they deem it necessary.
- Allegheny County Council passed Complete Streets Resolution directing the County to develop a Complete Streets Policy in addition to creating a Vision Zero Action Plan.
- Our successful push for a Vision Zero Commitment in 2024 yielded new protocols within city government and the publication of the City’s first Vision Zero Annual Report.
- The advocacy year culminated with the sold-out Vision Zero Summit, a first-ever conference in Pittsburgh, co-hosted by BikePGH and the City of Pittsburgh. ~200 public and private sector planners and engineers, residents and advocates gathered in Oakland to discuss the push to eliminate road traffic fatalities and serious injuries, and how we’re going to achieve this goal.

Education engages the public and teaches riders of all ages
- Released our 10th edition of The Pittsburgh Bike Map including more safe biking infrastructure than ever before + distributed over 18,000 copies to bike friendly businesses, schools, libraries, POGOH stations, and public events!
- With the support of People for Bikes, we created our first ever Bike Bus Guide website, handout, webinar, video, and resource package to encourage active transportation to school.
- Kickstarted a weekly bike bus to PGH Montessori and presented about this experience at The National Safe Routes to School Virtual Summit
- Completed an eight week bike safety education program for young people at The Promise Center of Homewood utilizing their new bike fleet and traffic garden.
- With PennDOT funding, we produced an educational video to show at school assemblies and with it distributed 300 high-quality bike light sets and helmets to middle school students at Pittsburgh King and Allegheny Traditional Academy.
- Helped Pittsburgh Science and Technology Academy to apply for, receive, and assemble a fleet of new bikes from The Outride Foundation bringing the total number of Pittsburgh middle schools with the Outride bike education program to five.
- Delivered “White Label” versions of our E-Bike Guide to advocacy organizations in Washington DC, Cleveland, and Kansas City inspiring them to create their own e-bike education resources.
- Learn 2 Ride returned for a second year with double the classes and over a hundred learners of all ages experiencing the joy of pedaling for the first time.
- Operation Illumination provided bike lights and helmets to over 570 cyclists!

Events celebrate the power of people-centered streets
- 400+ Pittsburghers, including special guests Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato and Mayor Ed Gainey, stopped by our Commuter Cafés in Downtown, Oakland, and the Strip District to celebrate bike-joy and support our business partners. Bike to Work Day supports our May Membership Campaign by energizing community members to support safe streets and active transportation in Pittsburgh, and this year the event secured 64 new BikePGH members!
- OpenStreetsPGH presented by UPMC Health Plan visited the East End, Strip District and Lawrenceville, bringing together the community to experience 7+ miles of car-free streets over two events. We highlighted over 200 local businesses to offer free programming, entertainment, and education for all ages and abilities. New this year was the Advocacy Side Quest, which helped deepen the link between events and our year-round advocacy.
- Raising nearly $300,000 for safe biking and walking, the 32nd annual UPMC Health Plan PedalPGH was a wildly successful sold-out event for 3000+ riders on over 100 miles of Pittsburgh city streets. It also featured a new local Beer Garden, an Advocacy Network Ride, and gained us 937 BikePGH members!
- The Pittsburgh Bike People attended 77 community events in 25+ neighborhoods to spread the word about BikePGH and POGOH and provide resources to thousands of residents across the city, distributing:
- 2000+ Bike Maps
- 300+ Family Guides
- 300+ E-bike Guides
- With 9 walks exploring 9 unique neighborhoods with over 150 participants, our new Neighborhood Walks series connected community members, sparked conversations about pedestrian safety, and celebrated the beauty and character of our local neighborhoods!
- Along with the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Duquesne, and Chatham, we supported the seventh annual Campus Bike Week with classes, bike light giveaways, and resources for a full week of biking education and campus events.
- Our dedicated volunteer base contributed a whopping 1500 hours to our programming! We recruited over 200 individual volunteers and 15 groups for OpenStreetsPGH, PedalPGH, Volunteer Nights, Bike Builds, and the WMNBikePGH Scavenger Hunt… WOW!

WMNBikePGH carves out intentional space and inclusive community
WMNBikePGH spent another year connecting hundreds of women + trans, non-binary, and genderqueer friends through our inclusive programming! This program helped grow rider confidence and build community through rides, classes, and skill sessions. We hosted:
- (9) No-drop group rides of various lengths through every season (except for the 2 that were canceled due to extremely extreme weather)
- (3) Confident City Cycling Classes helped equip people with the skills & abilities they need to commute by bicycle confidently.
- (4) Bike Maintenance Classes, with each class taking a deep dive on different parts of the bike: Brakes, Bike First Aid, Drive Train, Wheels.
- A record 40 riders joined us for our 5th Annual WMNBikePGH Camping Trip to bikepack down the GAP trail for an overnight adventure.
- Our first-ever WMNBikePGH Scavenger Hunt Ride + Party also brought together 100 riders of all skill levels to follow the clues and hit checkpoints around town, all culminating to an after-party at Spirit in Lawrenceville for pizza, drinks, crafts, and over $2000 worth of raffle prizes donated from generous local businesses!

Communication spreads the word
Our Communications & Marketing department supports the work of every BikePGH department, and a ton of hard work gets poured into making sure our multimedia content is engaging, our designs are cool, and our marketing is eye-catching for both existing and new audiences.
- We keep you informed! – Created over 40 dedicated explainer and recap videos for new infrastructure, education, and events; Follow us on social media to see!
- We lead by example! – Industry-wide, BikePGH shows exemplary Communications & Marketing strategies, with organizations across the country looking to us for inspiration and guidance.
- We make the news! – Through focused media outreach, we earned 60+ local and national media mentions for Advocacy, Education, and Events, including print, digital, radio, and television.
- We guide media narratives! – We lead conversations with the media on best practices for road safety topics, promoting the use of language like “Crash not Accident”, and letting media personnel know that we are here to help them frame stories accurately while also paying respect to victims of traffic violence.
- We have influence! – BikePGH’s content curation receives consistent acclaim and widespread Reach, with ~3,000,000 Post Impressions and over 88,000 Followers across all social media in 2025.
- And we use our influence for good! – We don’t just promote ourselves in an echo-chamber; we crosspromote YOU and everyone doing great things for our biking and walking community. The goal is to put our influence to good use and get eyes on the stories that matter. And with that, we might be called “Bike”PGH, but we heavily advocate for the rights of cyclists AND pedestrians, especially our neighbors who use mobility devices to get around.
Through our many communications channels, we make sure to keep promoting how BikePGH’s efforts to keep streets and roadways safer are shared across many communities and sectors; the goal is to have a transportation network that minimizes the risk of injury and death and is accessible for everyone, regardless of ability, income, age, race, or gender.
Pittsburgh doesn’t become a safer and more connected city by chance...

…it happens because thousands of people like you step up to make change possible. BikePGH’s Year End Campaign is our annual call to everyone who believes in making our city a place where we have safe and accessible mobility options for all.
It takes every single one of us to complete the picture as we launch our 2025 Year-End Campaign to raise $100,000 by December 31st:
